Fireball Reports
Here are all the reports
Date: 2012-Dec-24
Time: 20.45
Location: North Belfast
Report: Large orange ball travelling horizontally S to N at very high speed, approx 100-200 feet above the M2 motorway.
It was very bright and I had it in vision for approx 10 seconds where it seemed to turn white, start to descend, zig-zagged a bit, then disappeared from view as it hit the earth, or went into the water.
Judging by the distance it had travelled in the time I observed it, I calculated a speed of approx 800mph.
There were no sounds, sparks or a tail.
Date: 2012-Feb-16
Time: Approx 6pm
Location: 51*43'09.72"N, 0*30'39.06"W. Facing North East
Report: A ball of orange yellow light with a long tail, appeared for about a second, enough time to say "look at that" to my friend but not long enough for him to see it too. It was visible between a break in the clouds about 5 degrees from the vertical traveling from southeast to Northwest direction. It fizzled out and i'm sure I saw at least 3 distinct small pieces come off the main body and burn up and disappear. I have perfect eyesight and it was a very clear evening.
Date: 2012-Feb-11
Time: 20:20 p.m. (UTC+10:00) Guam, Port Moresby
Location: Pago Bay, Guam U.S.A.
Report: Noticed large fireball, orange and yellow flames within and a bright yellow glow around it. "Chinese New Year!, I exclaimed." Carol, kept driving and we watched it move in a horizontal manner, going SE to SW. It then went down vertically, and then up vertically at a very slow pace and held a horizontal position moving ever so slowly. We got out of our vehicle to record it with our phone, however it was like the darn fireball knew we were trying to record it, it then took off in at an alarming speed into the night sky! Not cloudy, stars in the sky, beautiful night. It wasn't a flare gun or anything of that sort, since we're both familiar with how one works. This was the most bizarre thing we've ever encountered! Thanks for allowing us to share!

Time: 08:05
Location: Sydenham, Belfast.
Report: I was facing southeast and at first thought it was a plane caught in sunlight, but this appeared to be something burning up coming into the atmosphere,
The fireball was also moving in SE direction as it moved away from me.
It was not so high that it was a bright white light, it was more of an orange/pink/red colour.
I could estimate how far it travelled as it was moving away from me but it was visible for approximately 4 minutes. It then disappeared behind some cloud and then a building.
There was no sound

The light appeared to come from behind me ie an Easterly aspect , the angle of dip I would estimate to be about 60 degrees , episode lasted fraction of a second .Height of fireball above my horizon I would estimate to be 300 m culminating just above the tree line of mature conifers . it was intensly bright , I liken it to a laser beam , I did not hear sound as I was in the car .

Time: At approximately 21.00
Location: Banbury, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
Report: Facing roughly south west, fireball was moving from west and stopped being visible just before reaching south. The fireball was highest in the sky in the west when first visible and gradually came down as it approached the south. The fireball was a bright vivid orange colour and was very distinctive in the clear night sky. The fireball was visible for roughly 5 seconds until it invisible. It traveled roughly 1/5 of the sky before it was no longer visible from west to south. No sounds were heard. My girlfriend who also witnessed this claimed to see it split up into one larger piece and one slightly smaller. It was seen to fade away to nothing.
Date: 2012-Jan-12
Time: 0756
Location: Sandholes near Cookstown
Report: I was driving south down the A29 towards Dungannon (beside the turn off to Tullylagan Road) from Cookstown when I saw a green orb directly ahead abd falling towards earth. It was travelling roughly at the same speed as would a firework and seemed to disappear just before it would have gone behind the hilly horizon ahead of me. It seemed to be running on the same course as that stretch of road, but seemed to come from above me and into my sight. It was only visible for about a second and a half and was soundless. There were no pieces as far as I could see.

Report: parking my car westerly direction, I noticed a flickering orange red light coming from north west to south east. I went indoors and out to my back garden to see it pass over, it had changed to a dull grey colour, it appeared to be a quarter of the size of the Moon at that time, a massive spinning rock. It did not appear to go back into the atmosphere. It carried on over the houses.

Location: Seen from M1 near Lisburn, c.2 miles north of Sprucefield, NI
Report: Sky was overcast, no stars obviously visible, though it was clear to the South and West. Bright meteor seen in direction roughly SW, a little to right of line of motorway. It lanced through the clouds at a steep angle moving downwards and a little from left to right, an angle 60 or more degrees to the horizon. Brightness around mag -3 or -4; similar to Jupiter and Venus. Appeared to fragment, but more likely this was one meteor seen appearing and disappearing through distant cloud layers. Duration 1 to 2 seconds roughly. Colour blue-white.

Time: between 20:10 and 20:15
Location: Heythrop, Oxfordshire
Report: I saw a very bright green coloured fireball, tear shaped with tail falling rapidly towards the horizon, but disappearing (I think) before it reached the horizon. The fireball was in the North West, falling nearly vertically at an angle of 80/85deg moving Easterly slightly (LtoR). I only caught sight of it as I looked up so I don't know how much of its travel across the sky I missed. I saw it about 20-30degrees above the horizon for a couple of seconds.
No sounds heard and I didn't see it disintergrate - one of the brightest and most colurful I've seen for a few years!

Report: I noticed a bright orange coloured fireball type object flying diagonally across Belfast Lough, heading from inland to the sea. It was large, at first I thought that it was an aircraft on fire. It was, low in the sky approx 200 Ft travelling at speed and there was little wind that evening so couldn't have been a large Chinese lantern as I have seen some of those lately. I was facing East at the time looking over towards Holywood from Whiteabbey. There were no noises associated with this. It disappeared from my site behind an apartment block

Location: Selkirk scotland
Report: I seen a large brilliant White ball come from east to west, this thing was very fast, lowish in the sky, fuzzy looking edge to the ball, with a slight trail behind, no noise from it at all and left my sight as I was standing behind a building. This thing could have been about the same size as the moon when seen from the ground.. Very spectacular and interesting! I made a wish on it, if it had been a star but I didn't win the lottery as I'd wished for. Would like to know more about these things
Date: 2011-Dec-14
Time: 8-15 P.M. approximately
Location: Cannon hill lane Sw20
Report: I was walking down Cannon Hill lane from the Kingston Road in Merton Park. Facing South South West. Across the sky, considerably lower than an aeroplane flies, a bright light moved at great speed from left to right. It was visible for approximately 3 seconds. It was slow enough to see but much faster than a plane. If I were able to judge the size it would be approximately 3 feet across. It was as bright as a star but more like pale fire. I saw it travel straight across the sky in my field of vision until it went out of sight, masked by the houses on Cannon hill lane. No sounds. No breaking pieces. No fading. It was like something on a mission rather too close to be usual.

Date: 2011-Dec-07
Time: 19:00
Location: Merlin Park Hospital Grounds, Galway City, Ireland
Report: A single bright orange ball moving slowly and silently across the very dark night sky. Object passed almost directly overhead of my location in central grounds of Merlin Park Hospital. Object was moving in a west to east direction. Size as observed was circa 2-3 times the diameter of a very bright star. Orange glow was very intense, and eerily similar to the intensity and colour tone of the orange street lamps in the hospital grounds. Flight path was straight, no apparent deviation observed during sighting period (circa 2-3 minutes). Was clearly visible from moment of observing due west until it disappeared high in the sky due East. Captured briefly (circa 50 seconds) footage on mobile phone video but no zooming capabilites - video shows a bright spot moving eastwards beyond hospital buildings and then disappears while still high in the sky - but perhaps this could be due to a cloud bank?? Height above horizon did not seem to alter. Light winds at ground level were moving in a similar direction.
Date: 2011-Dec-07
Time: 10:57-11:00
Location: East London. E18 2FD. IN the east sky
Report: Fireball going from south to north (low lying south east to north east) I was facing east and it went from right to left. It was quite bright as bright or even brighter than the stars in that area. Bright enough to break through london's light pollution. Visible for about a second with no sound. It's trail was also visible, but not for long afterwards. It seemed to fade away into nothing.
Date: 2011-Dec-01
Time: around 8pm
Location: about 10 miles south of newcastle seen form the A1
Report: A large bright white light coming down with a definate trail behind it that lasted for a few seconds and simply disappeared. It was travelling down at an angle from left to right (west to east) and looked quite low and near, in fact i looked to see where it might land as it looked like a plane on fire so we were 'initially' quite relieved when it disappeared as it was heading towards the motorway! We were travelling north to newcastle to see a band but seeing this stole the show! It wasn't visible for long and so is hard to say what distance it travelled but it was visible for around 3 seconds. It disappeared completely with no visible debris. it was far larger than any star/planet but not moon sized. Would be great if some one could give me some qulified information on what they think we saw! Thanks
TRACY

Time: approx 08.25am
Location: Castlewellan - Kilcoo Co down N Ireland
Report: While driving up cross lane BT34 5JT (towards the Bryansford Rd) I saw what looked like a plane on fire in the sky over the ocean (to my left - newcastle co Down) it was moving very slow but had a very small sort of tail - it was a ball of fire falling from left to right out of the sky but very slow - at a quick look it actually looked like it wasn't moving at all but when I stopped to look at it - it was def moving, there was no sound and it seemed futher away than a plan looks in the sky and it didnt leave a trail like a plane- at approx 08.40am I lost sight of it, seemed to fall behind the cloud line - very strange indeed!!
Date: 2011-Nov-11
Time: 4:58
Location: hoover alabama 35244
Report: I was walking in my freinds yard when i saw a huge glowing red orange object with red fire coming out of it and we dont have a image
Report: We were facing east and saw straight ahead a very white bright ball of light (estimate magnitude -7 (considerably brighter than Venus at brightest - minus 4.6?) or even -8
Moving parallel to horizon in northerly direction at about 45 degrees height in the eastern sky
seen through cloud cover (perhaps cloud level at 5,000 ft so absolutely not a firework!)
Head was ball shaped with definite width and scale
Had a short tail thinning gradually to a narrow taper
Duration 4-5 seconds travelled perhaps 5 to 10 degrees
Seen through gap in cloud cover so faded out rapidly after around 4-5 seconds
Date: 2011-Nov-02
Time: Around 5:30pm
Location: Erdington - Birmingham
Report: From Streetly Road/Short Heath, Birmingham, looking west, as looking to West Bromwich from Erdington. Fast moving, orange-coloured, round and silent falling, looked as if an airplane was on fire, or something was on fire. Moved from South to north in the west sky, disappeared behind the buildings... Visible for 1 minute, caught my eyes halfway down already, couldn't see anymore because of buildings in front of me. Compared to a bright orange star, large one. I was actually expecting an explosion when it hit the floor. I don't know what this is. No pieces falling from it. Steady light going down.
Date: 2011-Oct-31
Time: Approx. 7.30pm
Location: Back Garden
Report: Was standing at the back door and notice a large orange glow straight overhead. Thought this might have been a firework at first. The orange ball had 2 smaller fainter metorites following it, assuming broken off pieces. I watched it for about 1.5 mins as it slowly meandered into the distance before fading. Looking out my backdoor at 9pm I would normal see ursa major. The firball was travelling appox. 5-10 degrees to the left of the constellation. The firball was appox 35 to 50 degress of the horizontal. Did not hear any sounds

Report: Very bright white fireball (comparable to oncoming dipped headlights) in northern sky at about 40 degrees elevation, moving very fast at speed of shooting star, trail width approx .1 x diameter of full moon, length of trail approx 5 degrees, direction approx NNE, visible less than a second, faded away to nothing.
Date: 2011-Oct-24
Time: 07:11
Location: Newmarket, Suffolk, UK
Report: I was driving/facing North along the A142 between where the road passes over a railway line and the Snailwell roundabout.
The fireball appeared to my left running almost parallel to me travelling north.
I would say that it was lower than a jumbo jet in height as it left a small cloud like trail visible for some time amongst the surrounding clouds and sky.
It was extremely bright, like magnesium. This was at dawn (closer to daylight than night) when no stars were visible.
It was extremely quick although it was apparent to me that there were two blazes as if it broke in to two pieces. However I would say less than a second.
It's hard to estimate the distance it travelled as it startled me and I was driving at the time but I didn't see it travel very far, from the edge of my field of view looking out my windscreen until perhaps the mid point of my windscreen.
I didn't hear any sounds but almost directly after I saw it all the brids from the surrounding trees flew off (maybe a hundred or so birds) so perhaps there was a sound, or maybe this was simply a coincidence.
It seemed to me that it broke up and did not impact anywhere in the distance.
Once the flash had gone there was no sight of anything except the trail left in the cloud.

Date: 2011-Oct-21
Time: about 20:10
Location: South Downs East Sussex
Report: I think it was a firebomb - visible for about 5-6 seconds before it went behind a tree. I live in Plumpton Green at the foot of the Downs. It was towards Brighton so not sure if it hit land or went out to sea. It did'nt appear to break up and looked about 20 metres wide or more! Never seen anything so big. I guess if it hit the ground about 20 miles away i would have heard it. I'm about that from the coast. Facing SSE more or less exact - used a compass. Very bright orange with flames coming out back, it was not high in the sky at all, just above the south downs looking at ground level in Plumpton Green. No sounds, to me it looked like it was going to hit land as it was so big! Moved from right to left. If it was not high in the sky, could it have been something else i.e a meteor or are they the same thing? Sorry don't know all the jargon - please email me back with any news. Chloe :)

Location: Formby, UK (North West coast of England)
Report: Large orange object travelling S to N at a steady pace along the NW coast of England. The object traveled slightly faster than a plane appears to travel and was visible for around 1 minute. Relatively speaking it was around half the diameter of the moon. It had no visible tail or trail (although it was dark) and made no noise whatsoever.
Brightness wise, it is difficult to describe because it was a different colour to anything else. It was not as bright as a full moon on a frosty night but was far brighter than anything else in the sky and very visible. Best way to describe it, the same brightness as a fire/ bonfire in the sky.
The object did not break up, it merely disappeared into the horizon at a steady pace (living in a built up area with lots of trees etc, it is not possible to see very far into the distance though)
Attempted to photo it but got it too late so the photo just shows a dot of light in the distance
The object was witnessed by all 4 members of my family and also a local friend

Report: Looking East to North East on the 28-9-11 at 00:26
Flare/fireball seen on the north coast at 00.26 on the 28th
2 witnesses’, three of us were on Benone beach but only two of us had been facing in the direction of the sighting,
The Green then Green/Yellow flare appeared to descend sharply, Direction SW to NE At the time i thought it might be part of the satellite that was going to come down somewhere between northern Scotland @&the Norway. I assume anyone from our tiny little Provence could have seen this if they had been looking in the right direction at the right 2second moment in time.
I’d like to know if anyone else seen this..

Report: Large bright yellow/orange object travelling SW to NE at a steady pace. It's speed, distance or diameter I don't know but was much larger and moved faster compared to anything else in the sky. It came from behind a mountain, passed directly over my head and lost sight of it behind houses. The object had no visual tail or debris and did not break up nor did I hear sound apart the wind even as it passed over. The total duration would have been around 2 minutes or so. I grabbed my camera but only got the last few seconds before it disappeared.

Report: Big ball of fire more yellow color than blue that arced with a tail for about 5 to 10 seconds and burnt out. Looked extremely close. Never saw anything like it. Moon had been up for about an hour in the east and what I saw was about southwest in my backyard. It moved from S to SW. Did not see it breakup -it was very graceful and beautiful. It faded away. Dead silence and was as bright or brighter than the fullest moon I have ever seen.

Location: from Hillsborough, over Lisburn
Report: A clear night sky with a bright white tail streaking down towards earth for just over a second then, seemingly directly over Lisburn, (it was very bright and did appear to be rather closer than any I've seen before) as the tail appeared to burn out it broke up and I saw a yellow/orange flash ahaead of the tail which was visible momentarily.
It appeared to burn up just above the horizon, from my viewpoint which was over Lisburn towards Black Mountian (approximately 20 degrees North)
It moved in a very steep descent possibly 10 to 15 degrees off vertical in a left to right motion and was visible for maybe only the last quarter of the sky (from straight above to horizon)

Time: 10.30pm approx - may have been IIpm - I wasn,t wearing a watch or carrying a mob
Location: Loch Ken, Galloway Forest Park
Report: looking in North Easterly direction I saw a large fireball travelling very fast in an almost due east direction.
It was clearly something much larger than the shooting stars I have seen many times before when camping in the countryside.
This was lower down - not very high in altitude but close enough to see that it was losing fragments behind it as it travelled.
It travelled at a shallow downward angle.
It was quick but nothing like as short a sighting as a normal shooting star at high altitude.
I saw it for at least 2 seconds probably more, before it disappeared behind the low tree covered hills to the east.
I'm guessing it may have been space debris but it was a sizeable chunk if that's the case.
It's tail was not very long but clearly a burning sherical object almost white at it's centre surrounded by yellow with a pointed tail

The head was bright white at the front and became orange towards the rear. The trail was orange and white and twisted as if the object was "tumbling" rather than going in a straight line. Lasted two seconds then went black and could no longer see the tail either. Was quite low above the horizon when it disappeared, guess about 5 degrees.

Time: 11:15pm
Location: Cork
Report: Event:
A very bright meteor / fireball, I estimate the brightness to be equal to a full moon. It was difficult to look at due to its brightness. At first it was dimmer in light intensity with flame red edges and then it exploded with green colouring as it brighted to full intensity, leaving a trail behind it, although impressive in appearance I could hear no sound. No breakup only a big explosion, event lasted maybe 7 or 8 seconds. Event faded away beyond Epsilon Persei but due to clouds and a full moon it was difficult to see even though my elevation was about 175 meters.
Sky Conditions:
The sky had cloudy patches and the Moon was getting high in sky.
Location:
I don't think this was a Perseid as it was the opposite way round. It started at Epsilon Cassiopeiae in the North North West, passing through Alpha Persei and dying out beyond Epsilon Persei, moving from North North West to South South East direction.
Conclusion:
Doubtful if a meteorite would have resulted from this event as it was only as bright as the full moon for part of its duration.

Planes from Aldergrove come over our house and at first I thought it was plane lights but the ball came from a different trajectory. It remained in that position for about five minutes and then gradually reduced in size and brightness until it just disappeared.

Location: Kesgrave, nr. Ipswich, Suffolk, UK.
Report: I saw a fireball with a bright orange appearance and a white cloud trail, heading from a NE-S direction at approximately a 55 degree angle at it's highest point, to a 50 degree angle when I lost visibility. I was facing an easterly direction and caught a very good glimpse of it for all of 4 seconds whilst I was in my back garden, for about 1/4 of the length of the sky. It was very bright, and despite being in an area with streetlamps and sunlight just starting to show beyond the horizon, it was very clear. I saw no pieces break off, but I did hear a very slight fizzing sound, which caused me to spot in the first place. I can't estimate on a velocity, but as soon as I realised it was about to disappear behind the roof of my house, I ran to my front garden but it had already gone beyond the rooves of my neighbours houses.

Time: 1.50am
Location: Hertfordshire
Report: Heading:West-S/W
I stepped out the garden door and looked up at the sky within 3 seconds I realized an odd group stars, and then a strange thing happened. One of the stars appeared to be, moving I wondered if it was a satellite then it changed colour and appeared to be heading this way. It was yellowish turning neon green then in an explosive manor turned orange in a flash then vanished. This sighting lasted about 8 seconds. I was facing N/E, no clouds, no moon, looking directly up.
I wandered down the garden in the dark searching the sky. I realized I had actually seen an object vertically enter the earth’s atmosphere from the area around the triangles. I ruled out satellite, thought rocket or single jet engine but going in the wrong direction and concluded it must have been a fireball burning out on entry.
Suddenly, about 5 minutes later a green trail of light went hurtling over the top of the house. I thought wow a larger than ever low flying meteor with a long turbulent and whirling green glowing gas or vapour cloud trailing behind it. This sighting lasted only 4 seconds heading West-S/W, and in spectacular colours. There was sound as I think that is what made me look up again or I would have missed it on the way indoors.

Report: I saw a bright shooting-star like ball in the sky though I thought it was moving unusually slow to be a shooting star and it seemed brighter than a normal shooting star/ meteor, about as bright as a full moon. I'm sure that I was facing South West at the time of the spotting and the star seemed to travel from South/ South-West to West. The star continued to stay very high in the sky and did not seem to fall to the ground. I also did not hear any crackling or popping noises. As I spotted it, the star was extremely bright and as it gradually fell it faded away so it was not visbale anymore. It did not travel far across the sky and was visable for about 5-10 seconds. The only unusual qualities of the star was how slow it was travelling and its brightness.

Report: I saw big white light flying on the sky 27 Apr 2011 at 10:30. My boyfriend and I wore coming back from holiday and walking down the street to our home. Then we saw a big white light as bright as the stars flying from west north to north very slowly, then in just a blink of an eye the light went off and disappeared. It was strange because there was not other white or red blink light that planes and helicopters have. In my opinion it is a bit high for helicopter to fly high as it was flying and for a plane to have big light as a star. If you know what I mean! I have seen lots of Chinese Lanterns especially new years and it is not one of them.

Location: Above Belfast Lough, Northern Ireland
Report: Tonight at 11.20 on the 22nd, April 2011 looking toward Holywood from Greenisland. Seen what looked like a plane on fire but I could not hear any engines and it could not have been a meteor or shooting star as it did not seem to mantain a steady course. It was travelling northward and had came across from the Belfast direction heading over towards Carrickfergus. The light seemed to die out as it got further into the distance until it looked like it dissapeared from view over Carrick. I tried to get some footage on my digital camera but the object was too far away for my zoom, so poor quality shots I'm afraid........

Location: It was around mid march approx. Outside Limerick city.
Report: I was heading west towards turn off for Annacotty in Limerick. It was travelling in a S.W direction. I suppose it was midways in the sky. It was a red fireball and seemed to break-up in 3 or 4 parts.
It was I suppose as bright as the moon but red. It was visible for about maybe 2 to 3 secs. It didn't travel very far but it wasn't a normal meteorite you would see at night I reckon this one made it through the atmosphere. I didn't here any sounds as I was travelling in a car. I saw it break up into 3 or 4 parts. I saw it fade away to nothing. If if did land somewhere it would probaly have landed somewhere west of Limerick around Clonlara, O Briens, castleconnell area. I am sorry I don't have exact date in March. I pick up a guy that morning I give a lift to work and he saw the same thing also. Sorry I didn't report it then I only remembered when I saw the ISS fly over Ireland tonight. Best Regards, Maurice

Report: A meteor looked to skim the atmosphere.
From the Portadown road looking south. It moved from east to west for 5-6 seconds before losing sight, there appeared to be no angle of descent, size of satellite but with a tail behind.
It passed half way below Orion and the horizon and covered a third of the sky before going out of sight.
Date: 2011-Mar-01
Time: 8.30pm
Location: Boyle, Ireland
Report: A huge meteor, yellowish with a fiery red/yellow tail. It seemed that I could see the meteor itself burning and the tail sparking red. It was in the southern sky, travelling due west on what appeared to be an even trajectory - it didn't seem to be falling but was on a fairly level course. I watched it for several seconds as it travelled across the sky and guess it would have been well out into the Atlantic before it hit. It was big and therefore gave the inmpression that it was quite low but obviously that was probably just a trick of perspective. It was very bright, no sound, it stayed intact and it was still going when it eventually dissappeared behind trees, still on a level course. I followed it across half of the skyline. I watched for a flash if it hit but saw nothing. I'm not very good at guessing angles but it was about a third of the way up from the horizon at all times.
I would love to know if you have any information about it.

Report: I was out photographing the Northern lights and at exactly 20:28 i turned to look south and saw a very bright fireball. It was perhaps 10 degrees above the horizon and traveling from east to west in a relatively straight line. It streaked across the sky under Orion. I would estimate the brightness somewhere between magnitude -5 to -8, easily brighter than anything in the sky but not as bright as a full moon would be. It was visible for 5-6seconds and red and orange colours were visible as it burned up and faded from view. There appeared to be pieces breaking off it right before it faded as well. An incredible sight, best ive seen to date.

Report: Looking out over Belfast Lough from Holywood towards Whiteabbey this evening I saw a streak of white light which disappeared beyond the hills on the far lough shore. I assume it was a shooting star but it was astonishingly bright, especially given that the sky was still well lit. It was about 20 minutes before sunset, the sky was still very bright and there were only a few clouds. There were a few obvious high contrails but the light I saw moved far too fast be an aircraft, was visible only for little more than a second and left no track. From my viewpoint facing West-South-West it was travelling left to right at a 10 o'clock - 4 o'clock angle. I've seen shooting stars before but never in daylight.

Report: a fireball traveling very fast , with the naked eye it looked about the size of a blazing football. I was able to use my binoculars to see it, and it looked about the size of the moon , there were some "cracks" visible and a very distinctive ring of fire around it.It was traveling approximately west to east and at a very great speed. It appeared to be quite close moving left to right, and lasted possibly twenty to thirty seconds, visibility was good, howvever as it moved across my line of vision towards the right above some trees it vanished i got the impression it had gone behind some cloud.

It hovered directly over us for a while and looked mathematical four circles inside four squares enclosed in a square. It rotated above us then climbed away from us upwards into a cloud. At first we thought it was a chinese latern but the fact that it paused above us for few a minutes made us question that. Photos and phone videos were taken off it. Thinking it could be some sort of statelite.

Report: At aprox 20.15 on 24th December I was in my back garden, in almost perfect darkness when I saw what I took to be a shooting star.
I was facing in a northerly direction and the object moved from right to left across the sky.
It was clearly visible for about 5 seconds as it tracked across the sky eventually disappearing over the horizon.
I regularly see shooting stars where I live in the countryside but this one was unusual in terms of the length of time it was visible, its brightness and the fact you could discern a definite shape with what appeared to be a tail streaming behind it.
The night in question was frosty with a perfectly clear night sky, at no time did I hear any sounds or observe the break up of the object.

Report: I was facing NNW and saw quite a large orange ball of light travel North to South. It was very bright... about as bright as a full moon I'd say.
It come towards me from the Craigantlet Hills, taking several minutes to travel past me in a straight line, and eventually fade out of sight in the direction of Strangford Lough. Don't think it lost or gained any height.
Heard no sounds from it. Didn't see anything break off it.
I did film it for a while on my phone, though the footage is not great. But at one point it is in shot with a street lamp, so you can see how bright it was in comparison.

Report: I saw what I thought were the lights of a low flying aircraft but I realised they were too bright and the ball of yellow light was too big to be an aircraft. I was facing west and the light was just to the left of the Sun that was low in the sky and beginning to set.
I took a picture of it and then looked around and started to take other pictures of the scenery. When I looked around I thought it had gone until I realised that it had developed a long tail and was moving further to left of the sun and getting closer to the horizon. I took a short video, I thought I might be able to calculate its speed with Tracker software, but I was worried that it was soon going to be out of sight. I therefore took a few more pictures at full magnification.
The photo of the ball of light seems to show, when I zoom in fully, it splitting into two, the photos of the fireball and tail seem to show debris flying off it when zoomed.
It was brighter than the moon and it was probably on view for about 15 minutes.

Report: What I had seen was a bright (I suppose I could say) star. This is not my first sighting as I have noticed this in the past few months.
The star is really bright and looks as if it is flashing. It also seems as though if it is orbit as when I was watching it, it was going up and down and then turning in semicircles.
As looked into my telescope, I could see a bright red light just above it. Could I be right in saying that this may be a satelite as I have ruled out an airplane simply because I was also watching anb airplane flying past in the far distance and I had my window open so I could hear the plane but no sound was given off by what i am trying to discribe.
Now as for direction, I'm not too sure and also it would go back to it's original position after it moved. The best discription I could give would be was like a really bright strobe light. Like I said before, it was not an airplane. Also I was looking at this from my bedroom window and I could see this was a brighter star than anything else in the sky. If it is out tonight I definatly would take a video off it and if anyone can explain as to what it is by all means please get back to me.
Report: Looking south towards Derry City from Ballyargus a bright yellow object with a very bright burning tail, a (fireball would be a good description ) appeared low in the horizon and moved across the sky from the east to west. We watched this object for about seven or eight minutes before it disappeared behind the Urris hills north of Buncranna County Donegal. It was still daylight and the sky was clear with some clouds, the object was very bright against the daytime sky. There was no noise associated with the object and we did not see any pieces fall off it.

Report: Very bright fireball in East of Sky just above horizon.
Moon and Planet (Venus perhaps) just to the right.
Yellow colored, bright, not as bright as said planet.
Single bright track initially that broke up into a more diffuse trail and disappeared behind clouds just above horizon.
Came in at an angle of about 30-45 degrees to the Horizon moving Right to Left.
Btw - I also saw a smaller on yesterday (1st December) in same general direction and around the same time. Don't recall much, but was commuting on the M1, and I think it came in on a more perpendicular track to the horizon.

- the sky was clear.
- I was driving my car, when it caught my eye. It look like a massive snowball. It looked like more like snowball rather than a fireball - as from my point of view it was bright white.
- It was falling down behind the mountain from my point of view (based on the google map location).
- It was falling a quite at high speed, because as soon as i seen it, i stopped car to take a photo, but it went behind the mountain.
- The was a plane in the sky heading the direction the snowball, approx 3-5 mins behind it.

As it got nearer moving from right to left it looked much larger and was travelling at some speed there were four of us in the car at the time and we kept checking with each other to make sure none of us were seeing things.
as it past us our sight was blocked by trees and we were no longer able to find it in the sky. There was no noise as we were listening I just wish I had've been able to get a photograph or video
the only way we or i am able to describe it is like a ball of fire.
I have been checking the news and on line to see if there had been any reports but have still been unable to find anything
I would appreciate any feed back you could offer.
yours sincerely

Report: A large Comet-like fireball heading northwards. I actually thought a plane was on fire that was coming into land as it crossed the sky in front of me. To be honest, it was like something out of a film as it blazed across the sky. It must have been fairly close as the ball itself was huge and the tail as far as I could see was maybe three or four times as long again. It was extremely bright as at first I thought it was a firework streaking. There were no sounds but with sound being slower than the speed of light and having gotten into a car after seeing it, I may not have been able to hear it anyway. It did not fade on it's journey and nop pieces fell away. I was standing near the middle of the main street which is quite wide at the Donn Carragh hotel about to get into my car when it's brightness and movement caused me to look up. It travelled from one side to another in a straight continual movement. I had a view of about a quarter of the sky. From a perspective point of view, it was like a fiery football been kicked from one side of the street to the other one hundred yards away if that makes sense.

It then suddenly seemed to burn out. In all my 72 years I have seen many shooting stars but never anything as bright or sustained as this (approximately 2 seconds). My wife also observed it and there was a fair amount of traffic emerging from the A26 at the Northern Exit from Ballymena at the same time. Field of view limited by car windscreen. It also looked like there was smoke coming from the tail. It flew across the night sky at around 1000 feet for quite some distance getting lower in the sky all the time eventually disappearing below the houses and school off in the distance.

Facing north, I saw a very bright object (-11 to -13 magnitude) travelling in a Northeast to West Direction. At first it had a tail and was glowing white. This changed to red and at that point streaks of red started coming from the main object. It very quickly turned green and the tail grew very small. It stayed green until it disappeared.
It was travelling quite slowly.
Initial Azimuth was about 45' and Initial Altitude was about 25'.
Final Azimuth was 300' or less and Final Altitude was about 10/15' above the horizon.
There was no terminal flash or sonic affects associated with the object. It disappeared low on the horizon.

Time: approx 5:45pm I was driving so can't be sure.
Location: West Antrim on hill overlooking Lough Neagh/Beg/ Sperrins
Report: Ball appeared in North and streaked across sky in approx. ENE to WSW direction, very oblique shallow trajectory. Green colouration at times. Visible 5-8 secs.
I was driving almost due west, appeared in drivers window and disappeared behind westerly cloud bank over the Sperrins.
The fireball was low, I'd guess lower that Ursa Major in the sky at that time, perhaps cutting the middle of it (I didn't see it at the time!)
Very bright, less that Sirius I would say, similar to Moon, but fuzzier. Also it was cloaked somewhat with thin cloud which would have affected brightness.

Location: Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary
Report: I was driving from Thurles to Borrisoleigh in Tipperary and just as I was driving in to Borrisoleigh I saw a fireball travelling from East to West at a high speed. It had a long red tail and was a very bright white in the front. It looked like it was going to hit the ground but it disentegrated in the atmosphere. It looked to be travelling at a height of a low flying airplane. It seemed to be slighlty brighter than a large bright star. It travelled across almost half the sky. It seemed to fade in the sky as it dipped towards the surface.

Location: G766794, Castletown, Dunkineely, County Donegal
Report:
My location at the time of the sighting; G766794, Castletown, Dunkineely, County Donegal
I was walking at the above location on a bearing of 226degrees approx and I saw a bright green light (sort of phosphorescent colour) off to my right, which was much brighter than a full moon.
Once it caught my attention, I saw it for about 1.5 - 2 seconds.
I estimate that it was travelling on a bearing of about 210degrees and at about the height of a small low flying aircraft.
It seemed to be decreasing in altitude at about 5-10degrees to the horizontal
It seemed to be travelling much faster than an aircraft but much slower than a 'shooting star'
It seemed to be slowing and then it completely extinguished - It didn't break up, it just went out.
It disappeared somewhere at about 255degrees to my position and 30degrees above ground level.
It was a clear night and I had a clear view of the fireball.
There was no sound from it at any stage.
I know these things are subjective but if it continued on its original trajectory I think it would have come down towards the end of Benroe (near Carntullagh head) or in Donegal Bay

Report: I was in Flower Field Arts Centre Park with my dog on Sunday evening.I was watching a plane overhead flying northwest when this huge fireball shot across the sky in a westerly direction,or maybe slightly south westerly. It appeared to be about the size of the moon with a very long tail and much brighter than anything I have ever seen in the sky before. It seemed to be on a lower altitude than the lights of the plane I was watching. It was bright white with a yellowy orange tail.It was travelling very fast, I watched it for about four seconds until it disappeared out of sight towards the direction of the River Bann. It was an amazing sight

Location: Millfield Ballymena
Report: My son and I were sitting in our front living room. In front of our house is a massive green, all of a sudden above this field was a bright white light, it lit up the whole green and the sky.
There was a helicopter in the sky at the time, my son thought it may have been the spot light from the helicopter, but it's spot light would have not lit up the sky and field like that. After a few seconds it was over. I then looked out and the whole front was covered like a thick fog we could see nothing up the field, then after few seconds it cleared. All my son and I witnessed was a very bright light, and a weird fog.

Report: A VERY LARGE BRIGHT STAR WITH AN ORANGE FLAME BEHIND. IT APPEARED TO BE VERY CLOSE TO THE HOUSES BEHIND MINE
Report: I was out walking with my 2 sons when one said 'look daddy, a shooting star' when I looked up there was a bright fireball in the sky, West/south west direction, moving north to south in direction. It had a long bright tail. We watched it for about 30 seconds until it disappeared from view low in the sky. It looked as though it had burned up or gone to ground. Never saw anything like it before.
Hard to explain the size but if compare the moon to the diameter of a dinner plate this would have been a cup.

Location: Bolton, UK
Report: Driving along the dark unlit M61 motorway near Bolton, England, heading North-West, at 17.40, I noticed a white point of light appear in the sky in front but slightly to the right of me in the distance, at approx. my 1 o'clock, about 20deg above the horizon. It was quite dim at first (I noticed it because it was moving quickly, not because it was bright). It moved quite quickly, from right to left, in a straight line, disappearing behind trees at the left side of the motorway at approx my 11 o'clock). As it moved across the sky it got brighter - when it was about half way across (right in front of me) it was about as bright as Jupiter is in the night sky at the moment, and had started to develop a tail/trail with 'sparks' flying off it as it disappeared behind trees on the left side of the motorway. I heard no sound (I was in a car), and I didn't see any colour, it was just bright white. It was in view for about 6 seconds. I believed this to be a meteor and when I got home I had a quick look on Twitter and saw other people had reported it, mainly in Ireland, and today I came across the story on the BBC news website linking to your site, so I thought you might be interested in my report.

Location: East Belfast
Report: I walked out of my house (my house faces West) to witness a bright white fireball with a multicoloured though predominately blue trail. the trail was not particuarly long but was quite thick. It was low in the sky and was travelling from N/E to S/WW roughly. The rate of decent was approx 20 degrees and it travelled quite slowly compared to a shooting star. It may already have been visable before I saw it but it lasted for about 5 seconds. I was able to see the fireball appear to fizzle out before it was obscured by a row of houses. The point at which it appeared to fizzle out would have to have been over the greater Belfast area. There was no sound and it did not break up into seperate fireballs. If I had to guess where it would of landed I would say around Lough Neagh or further West.

Report: I was clearing snow from my car when I noticed a light in the sky. At first I thought it might be a firework but its trajectory was too straight. I was facing approximately West at the time and the object appeared to be travelling to a point just South of West at about 60-70 degrees above Horizon. The sky appeared foggy, though it wasn't foggy at ground level, but the object could be clearly seen and appeared to be at the approximate height of a light aircraft but it's hard to judge, likely to be much higher if it was also seen in Tipperary! The object appeared to be a bright white light with a tail, similar in size to about 3 or 4 planet Venus. The tail appeared to emit 1 or 2 bright off-shoots which quickly burnt out. It was clear in the sky when I first saw it and it disappeared behind some houses. There were no associated sounds. I would estimate it was visible for 3-5 seconds. I would guess I saw it travel across 1/5 of sky. Hope this is of some use.

Location: Mallow Road, Rathduff, Co. Cork
Report: I was driving northwards on the Mallow Road in County Cork when I spotted a large orange light travelling across the sky, it was travelling a lot faster than a plane and was much bigger so I pulled car over and observed for a few seconds, all of a sudden it appeared to explode into a bright white light before disintegrating into a small green ball and falling to ground North West direction. Two hours later I saw three orange lights blazing across the sky and called another person to witness it, these in my opinion appeared to be lanterns, it may have been coincidental. It was a very cold but clear night so visibility was good. I reported this to astronomy Ireland about an hour after incident on Sunday night.

Location: on the road to Moira, just turned in of the carriageway
Report: moving from right to left, travelling at considerable speed and lasted about 15 seconds. An extremely bright object, may not have been an orb at all. Very clear night allowed for excellent display, a prominent tail of green/blue then into bright red.
A fairly flat trajectory more than the planets curviture, but not by much. It is my understanding that space debris comes in at a much tighter entry, to ensure burn up, before surface impact. My brother Christopher,(he was driving) and myself had a very good view after making a brisk halt. We were facing NW but silenced by distance. Absolutely fantastic, lucky if it is once in a lifetime. Had to report it.

Location: Travelling NW along Markethill Road towards Armagh. 2 minutes outside Markethill
Report: I was travelling NW by car. The object appeared slightly to the right of my direction of travel, halfway between NW and the Plough. The object travelled parallel to my direction of travel and seemed to move down across the sky. Due to the restricted visibility of the car windscreen the object appeared low in the sky, perhaps 30 degrees above the horizon and it descended through 5 degrees before disappearing. It was about as big as one quarter the size of a full moon at its biggest and shone as brightly for a brief time. It appeared to me to have a slight green colour for a time, certainly not red or blue. It took just over one second for it to brighten from a small point of light to its maximum. After the maximum it promptly disappeared into nothing, well above the horizon. No sounds were heard (perhaps due to the car) and the object seemed to remain intact as I observed it.

Report: I was out walking my dog last night when I noticed a bright light in the sky, looking up I saw it for about 3/5second. What really got my attention was the fact it was very bright and was like a fireball. After which it disappeared, went out.... I was on Bleary road just coming to Deans road. All in the sky was the Moon and a single star. The shooting star/Fireball was going from the northwest to the southeast direction. It appeared to be heading in the direction towards the Mournes It travelled across about a quarter of the sky before disappearing from my sight. No sounds. No brake up or pieces falling off. It disappeared high in the sky. It appeared to be very close to the earth. I've seen shooting stars in the sky before but this appeared closer than I had ever seen before.
I would be interested to know if anyone else saw this event also.

Report: A large bright red/orange fireball flying across the sky shedding flames and pieces as it went. There was no sound, the trajectory was higher than aircraft passing in and out of the airports and seemed "flatter"and brighter than a rocket or pyrotechnic such as a flare. It passed out of sight rather than burned out. it passed west to east right to left approx. from my 8.o'clock position to heading towards 3.o'clock position if north is 12 o'clock. a mixed description I know but there was so many people screaming about it it was hard to write down details at the time I hope this helps, the children and I usually watch the meteors this was a different colour but heading in the same direction as those from my viewing point.it was there and gone before we had a chance to get a camera or sight on it.

Report: I'd been sitting in my living room (in Bangor) on the laptop and noticed something an orangey colour in the sky. At first I thought it may have been a Chinese lantern but it was travelling too fast, but not as fast as a shooting star. It's tail was only about half the length of the fireball. Infact i actually thought I was seeing things and went outside to the front of my house which faces approximately north. It was travelling from my right to my left in a straight line, and NOT towards earth, but across it.

Report: My brother and I were setting up our telescopes when I saw this bright orange-red object in the sky. We thought it was a plane on its way to Aldergrove, but it was totally the wrong colour. We watched it for maybe a minute and then it disappeared directly above us. There was no sound, it just extinguished abruptly. But the REALLY ODD thing is that when I pressed my watch light-button, it was 2 minutes past eight. Two hours later than the sightings I've been looking at on the internet. So this must have been a separate piece of the original object - but two hours later!?
It vanished directly overhead, (neck craned up) just below or at the constellation Cassiopeia.
It was quite awesome.

On looking out of the side window I observed a luminescent pale green trail against the stars, (like a moonlit aircraft contrail but there was no moon) from approximately overhead to approximately 45 degrees elevation travelling on a track from north to south. We realised that it actually appeared to be a ball of fire with bits fo fire falling from it. We were driving up Finaghy Road South, and turned right into Erinvale Estate. The object was travelling on our left side towards us. We were so amazed at what we saw we pulled in to watch it. It was travelling As it was getting lower the flames were extinguishing towards us on our left hand side. We drove up to our house and parked . When we got out we could smell burning and saw a grey, black ball, about the size of a football, rolling slowly earthwards. It started as high as the stars and the last we saw it passed over the rooftops and out of sight. This all lasted over 10mins. It was totally amazing.

Location: In the northern sky
Report: I got a call from my father who had first noticed this 'streak' at around 21:10. We live just outside the village of Belleek (approx 7 miles NW of Newry, Co.Down). What I observed was a bright, motionless, pale, hazy streak in the North sky. It was very noticeable even though there was patchy cloud and very few stars could be seen. It appeared to be vertical (North South aligned) and between 1 and 2cm long when observed through your fingers at arms length. The colour was a blueish white. It's position remained exactly the same over the 15 minutes I observed it until it faded away to nothing. It did not appear to flicker or pulsate as you would see in a showing of the Northern Lights, nor could I observe any other associated 'streaks'. There was a break in the clouds around where this streak could be observed and while difficult to make out, it did seem like there were some faint clouds nearby which appeared distorted or in an rough downward facing fan shape. The streak did not distort in any noticeable way to the east or west while I observed it. By unfocusing my eyes slightly I believe I could make out a star within the streak approximately two-thirds way down from the top of the streak (another star was clearly visible slightly west of the object, 10 to 15cm at arms length). The moon was quite bright, above and behind me, still slightly east and was visible through the broken clouds. I would say that this streak to the North was not as luminous as the moon, perhaps half so, but it was also very obvious, and the brightest object visible in the North sky. The streak was also observed by a friend of ours who lives just outside Keady. To a degree, this reminded me of some of the photographs taken after some recent high altitude exploding fireballs over Canada and Sudan (I think it was Sudan), the main difference was that the path of the trail (if that is what it was) in this instance was not erratic like those I've mentioned, nor was there any sign of a terminating point which you might say was where the object 'exploded'. I should also mention that there was (at least from where I was observing) clear sky above and below the streak.
I would be very interested to know if you have recieved any similar reports from last night. I understand you guys are extremely busy (I worked in the observatory with Dr. Jan DeGroot for a summer many years ago) but if you could get back to me sometime it would be greatly appreciated.

Report: I was looking in the southern sky between eight and nine o'clock pm. What I saw was a dim object, traveling at a constant speed, getting brighter and brighter. At first it looked like a plane, but as it got brighter and escalated to a pulse like flash I realized it couldn't have been. The objects flight path was moving south east, visible for about six centimeters of the night sky, quickly fading out of sight after the half a second long flash. The object stayed intact and was visible for about three seconds. No sounds, the flash got about 1/4 as bright as a full moon.

Report: my son reported to me that spomething was on fire in the sky when i went outside i saw what initially appeared to be a flare type light in the sky which was quite obvious and of a good size, it was bright red with a tail of smoke above it as it was coming down to earth, it quickly went out of view in the landscape. There was also a light in the sky moving away from this like a helicopter or a plane hence the panic we had calling 999. we were facing towards derry when we saw it (n) and it was much biggewr and brighter than any star, visible for about 6 secs or so, no sound was heard thank you

It wasn't above my head and I seen it face on at a fairly normal level of vision.
It didn't break up and there wasn't any noise,it was visible approx 4 seconds.

Report: I saw a large purple-blue object fly across the sky for maybe 10-15 seconds before fading away to nothing, however it was already moving before I looked up and saw it. I am not sure that it was a fireball, but some of the other reports sounded similar to what I saw. It was moving north west in basically a straight line. From where I stood, it looked about the size of a basketball. It was about 40 degrees high, but that's just a guess. It was very bright, but sort of hazy and not quite as bright as the moon. I did not hear any sounds.

Location: Glenholm Park, fourwinds, Belfast.
Report: Due to being within a flight path I am used to seeing planes coming in to land etc, however this light was extremely orange and was the wrong colour/shape/size/speed for a plane.
The light moved quite slowly towards the back of my house, at quite a height, similar to that of a plane, but appeared to get slightly lower as it moved. It continued in the direction towards Belfast city centre, however was not as far as that, it was then roughly over the top of the houses in my street.
I rang my mother and she and friends seen the same thing also. The light continued for about 2 minutes, then stopped, and moved backwards in the OPPOSITE direction. Then after a short period of time continued in the original direction.
After about another minute the light appeared much smaller, and then abrubtly disappeared.
The light was rather large, a firey orange colour, similar to that of a street light, and was just as bright. It was at a height similar to that of a plane in descent.

Report: I was standing outside the car facing south when in my peripheral vision something bright caught my attention. I turned to view it, facing roughly southwest. I saw a very bright green meteor. It had the characteristics of a green flame with a white centre. It was very bright, being as bright as a struck match. It was travelling from right to left as I looked at it. I guessed its angle of descent was about 60 degrees from horizontal. Size was very difficult to judge as I had no idea of its distance from me, although it did not appear to be very distant. I would say it was about 40% as big as the moon last night. It lasted for about 5 or 6 seconds, before disappearing below the treeline. When I first saw the meteor it was high in the night sky, coming from roughly west. I was looking at angle of approx 45 degrees following it downward. It did not have any trail, and I did not hear any noise as it travelled.

Report: I saw what seemed to be a large (around 1-2cm) long fireball in the sky. It seemed to travel fast past my house, then slow down when it got further away.It then seemed to stop and float in mid-air. Then slowly disappear, before disappearing it constantly dimmed and got brighter over and over again.
I then thought it was over, only to turn around and see two more coming my way, this scared me. they followed the same path and did the same as before, however they lasted longer and one more came past my house again. It was very surreal, I would love to know what they were.
The fireball moved left to right.
It was very bright i'd say brighter than a star.
They were visible for around 3 minutes all together, maybe longer.
It travelled the full way across the sky.
I did not hear any sounds coming from the fireballs.
I could see pieces falling off.
I cant be sure if the object simply disappeared. However the first fireball seemed to go up into the air.
I hope this information helps. I also did try to get a video, however the camera on my phone couldnt capture it. I would still be happy to send the video incase you can adjust brightness etc.

LASTED LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO SPOT IT, POINT IT OUT TO FRIENDS, AND THEY HAVING ENOUGH TIME TO TURN AND SEE IT THEMSELVES. IT SEEMED TO TRAVEL MUCH SLOWER THAN A USUAL METEOR (AS IN A 'SHOWER')
WE WERE FACING EAST, AND THE FIREBALL AS MENTIONED RAN NORTH/SOUTH, ABOUT MIDWAY UP FROM THE HORIZON.

Report: I was driving heading in a NE direction , i noticed a bright green light ( small circle I think with a red end ) streaking over the road , it appeared to be travelling downwards ( trajectory ) and disappeared into woods , the object was travelling from South to North , I think it may have been about to strike the ground but I am not sure . It was definitely not a firework nor I am sure a distress / signal flare as it was travelling too fast . I was driving so I estimate looking throught the windscreen it was not very high in the sky at all . I did report it to the local police . Because I was in the car I heard nothing nor see it break up .

Location: driving northwest
Report: On February 4th 2010 I spotted a green fireball at approximately 7:10 pm Los Angeles time. I was driving northwest and the object moved from left to right. It was about 25 to 35 degrees over the horizon. It lasted for maybe 5 seconds across about 1/5 of the skyline. It was bright green and then faded out. That evening there was a brief report on 1070 am radio and since then I have heard nothing from any news agency. It is also strange that the time difference between Ireland and Los Angeles does not fit the time slot. Also seems weird that it would be visible from the other side of the planet. I have to assume these are two different events but too close to not mention it.

Report: Exact Time - 6 pm
Your Location - Markethill, Co Armagh
Direction you were facing - Driving towards Armagh on the maain Newry Road
Direction the fireball moved (e.g. Left to Right, if you know what direction you were facing) or Left to Right towards Armagh in a downwards position
NE to SW, or S to N, etc)
Height of the fireball above your horizon at start, highest point, and end of its visibility. You can estimate
that in degrees if you have the experience, where 0 degrees is the horizon and 90 degrees is overhead. Otherwise,
say something like 'halfway from the horizon to the zenith (overhead point) about 45 degrees
How bright was it, compared to a full moon? the tail was bright orange
For how long was it visible, in seconds? 4-5 seconds
How far across the sky did you see it travel - e.g. halfway? Less? More? only lasted about 4 - 5 seconds and it was travelling very fast so probably estimate it as travelling a third of the way across the sky
Did you hear any sounds, like bangs, or pops, or crackling? no
Did you see it break up, or any pieces fall off it? no
Did you see it fade away to nothing, or did you see it disappear behind a building, or tree, or hill etc? disappeared behind trees and I honestly thought it would have hit somewhere around Armagh in the direction it was travelling

Report: Glad to see someone else saw this!
I was travelling North approaching Moy Village on Wednesday 3rd. February, 2010. Time was 17:56. I saw a bright whitish fireball about the size of a football with long orangy tail for about 2 seconds. It seemed to 'dim' for a fraction of a second then flash brighter for a fraction of a second as bits broke off and burned up reddish colour in the tail, the fireball continued on until obscured by rooftops. Total time about 4 seconds. It was 'slow' and appeared to falling downwards rather than travelling across the sky. Direction was left to right, maybe SW to NE just under 45 Deg. I heard no sound (in moving car with radio on). Quite a sight! - the best I've ever seen - I thought it was a satellite falling from space!

Report: i live in sligo...and yesterday I noticed the meteor which passed over Sligo at approx 6.10pm ? I didnt check the time when i saw it...but it was around this time....... i would estimate that the meteor was flying in nthe trajectory of the black arrow on the attached jpg file...approx north north east or slightly north of north east..
when i noticed it it was approximately level with the car park in connaughton road....and about 10-15 seconds later it had moved approx another 1000 to 1200 meters.... (and its volume seemed to have reduced at this stage by 60-70% in size)
it is hard to say exactly how high the meteor was flying ???? maybe 1200-1500 meters..... i hope this information is of use to you....

Report: At approximately 5.55pm I was travelling on the A3 from Portadown towards
Armagh. I was about Allens Honda Garage when I saw the fireball on my right in
the approximate direction of the Moy and Dungannon Roads ouit of Portadown.
The fireball appeared to be falling from the direction of Armagh possibly
towards the direction of the Bannfoot /Lough Neagh. It was low in the sky (I
only saw it for about 2 to 3 seconds before it disappeared behind trees) and
definitely appeared to be falling as opposed to following the earths
curvature. A ball of flame is the best description I can offer with the flames
tailing behind it and what looked like a shower of sparks following behind. It
looked kike a firework except it was going down instead of up. I hope this
sighting is of some use to you.

I live in Sligo an witnessed three fireballs travelling in close proximity from east to west .
The fireballs seemed to be just above the height of Sligo Cathedral, coming towards where I was standing
as I was walking west to east they appeared motionless in the sky for a moment getting brighter and then faded to nothing.
My opinion is that these were smaller fragments that eventually burned up in the atmosphere.
Several people witnessed this in Sligo

Time: roughly 6pm
Location: approx 5 miles out side of Newry on the Armagh Road
Report: Two colleagues and myself where driving home from work last night at roughly 6pm. We where approx 5 miles out side of Newry on the Armagh Road, when Linda Geraghty (the driver) said, “What is that”? We all looked up into the sky and there was the “fire ball” passing in front of our eyes from left to right, at this stage it was pretty low in the sky and appeared to fall behind the fields to our right.
It was a strange colour, maybe orange or red with a tail falling behind it.
At first we thought maybe it was a light aircraft that had caught fire, or a UFO (strange but true). We tried to contract Armagh Planetarium but they where closed. We then contacted 5FM to see if any of their other listeners had seen it. When we got home we informed our families, who obviously thought we where crazy. However Catherine, Linda and myself where sure of what we had seen, I checked teletext to see if anything had been reported, then on Ceefax Page 106 RTE 2 it was reported.
We came into work today and told our colleagues, we then found the article on the BBC website that said “He said it was very important for anyone who saw it to report their sighting and suggested contacting either the Armagh Observatory or the Irish Astronomical Association”.
So please find attached our account of what we seen, should you require any further information do not hesitate to contact us via email!

Location: travelling along the M1 last night in the direction of Dungannon
Report: My wife and I were travelling along the M1 last night in the direction of Dungannon. At around 6pm we were somewhere between the Lurgan junction and the Birches junction when we saw a large light in the sky moving towards the ground, in front of us and to our right. It wasn’t until we saw reports on the news this morning about other sightings that we realised that it may have been a meteorite.
I hope this information is of some value.

Report: was travelling towards Strabane from Omagh on Wednesday evening around 6pm and was about a mile from Victoria Bridge when I saw the fireball/ meteor to the top left hand side of my car windscreen. It seemed a whitish ball followed by a red/ orange tail, far bigger and brighter than your normal “shooting star”. It went across the screen, in a top left to bottom right direction but obviously did not travel the full length of the screen. It was visible to me for around 2 – 3 seconds before disappearing behind a darkish cloud and then there seemed to be a flash. I would say it was heading in a NE direction.

You can estimate that in degrees if you have the experience, where 0 degrees is the horizon and 90 degrees is overhead. Otherwise, say something like 'halfway from the horizon to the zenith (overhead point) – I’d say it was only about a quarter to a third of the way between the horizon and the zenith.... closer to the horizon than the zenith
How bright was it, compared to a full moon? – it seemed as bright as the moon but with orange flames coming from it and a smoke trail
For how long was it visible, in seconds? Only a couple of seconds.... I shouted ‘Look’ three times, by which time my husband finally turned round and it was gone.
How far across the sky did you see it travel - e.g. halfway? Less? More? I only saw it travel about a quarter way across the sky, but in a downwards direction, almost at a 45 degree angle
Did you hear any sounds, like bangs, or pops, or crackling? No
Did you see it break up, or any pieces fall off it? No
Did you see it fade away to nothing, or did you see it disappear behind a building, or tree, or hill etc? – Disappeared behind the skyline of Lurgan..... which is about town-house height....
Thanks.
I saw yesterday’s fireball and in the news today it suggests forwarding whatever information you have to the Armagh observatory or to Astronomy Ireland.
I thought I’d drop you a note as suggested ....
It was about 6pm, I was speaking to my husband at the time and initially thought it was either a meteorite or an aeroplane crashing (or even someone launching a rocket attack in the distance.... well, it is Lurgan!)..... I shouted at him to turn round but he was too late.... as there was no explosion that I could hear then I concluded it was a meteorite....
Direction – I was looking sort of north west of Lurgan and it appeared to be moving from my left to right, therefore it must have been travelling in a north easterly direction.... and it was moving downwards at about a 45 degree angle.
The fireball appeared to be about the same size as something like the moon would look to us in the sky. It was bright creamy white, had oranges flames following it and then a dark tale of smoke.... that’s what made me think it might be a crashing aircraft.
It just disappeared down behind the Lurgan skyline

Report: I saw a huge fireball through the window at daybreak it's hard to describe the intensity of light but it was very bright and had the sky been darker it would have lit up the whole sky.It was traveling in a W to E direction I was facing east. It's hard to know the height but much lower than a jetplane and very beautiful as it seemed to glide rather than fall, the whole thing lasted just seconds and it disappeared out of sight behind a hill.

Report: the date could be out slightly. I was standing at the window about to make a phone call after dark so it was some time after nightfall. A massive fire ball passed my vision in the sky. I thought it was a meteor, and I put the phone down in shock. i'de never seen a shooting star, nver mind a fire ball!!! There were flames behind it and I was sure it was going to crash in the region of Magherafelt, it seemed so low that it would crash only miles away..in a panic i ran into the sitting room watching out the window expecting to see a bright flash of it crashing but it never happened. I searched for it on the news, but no mention of it. The next morning i visited my aunt and asked had she heard anything on the radio about a fireball in the sky and nobody apparently had seen it. it never turned up on any news, nor on the British news. It was not a halucination, I don't take drugs, or alcohol. i'm baffled. Strangely though i flew to Mexico to meet my Mexican husband with the kids on the 15th June and he told me as soon as i'd arrived that he had seen a fireball in the sky while up on the roof deck the week previously which really scared him as he had often seen shooting stars in Mexico and small fireballs but nothing as big as what he witnessed. He did exactly the same thing as me..he waited in fear of impact and then when none came he asked people living by if they had seen what he had just witnessed, but they hadn't so he turned on the news. but nothing..I could'nt believe it...I told him i'd witnessed exactly what he described in the sky the week before. which would have coincided with the time he saw his..yet I wsa in Northern ireland and he was in east of Mexico. we can't seem to make sense of it at all!!! Are these regular occurences? why do pepel not see them?? what I saw would have had drivers on the road calling in their thousands!!!. Please don't think I'm making this up. This has baffled me for years!!!

Report: while walking dog in early hours of morning in field near house looking at sky for shooting stars, clear still night walking in southerly direction turned to look to left and high in sky as if from nowhere an orange fireball appeared falling in an arc straight down towards the ground watched for about 8-10 seconds as it fell towards ground thinking it was heading straight for the roof of the factory across the other side of the field however as it neared the ground it appeared to slow down and stopped hovering above the roof for a few seconds it then appeared to change shape elongating sideways into a cigar, shape still bright orange, as orange as the street lights on the road. it then started to move sideways in a southerly direction towards caldbeck fell, seemed to follow the line of dalston road maintaining the same altitude above the ground was moving as quickly as a car away from me. it seemed to rise with the lay of the land, watched it as it rose up to and over the hill until it disappeared into the distance, i would say it stopped about 30 or 40 feet above the factory roof and that is the height it maintained above the ground as it flew off into the distance. i have no idea what this object was nor have i ever seen anything like it before or since. can anyone shed an light on what this may have been,it definitely wasn't a plane, a chinese lantern or a meteorite, i have seen many of these as i have worked night shifts for many years. i watched the object in clear view for about a minute and a half i think. there was no sound from the object but it was a still night and i was able to hear noise of the factory and local rail works which are over a mile away in the distance the fireball maintained its size and no pieces fell of it and i was able to see it until it disappeared into the distance. i looked inthe papers at the time to see if there were any other reports and have looked on the internet several times for similar occurrences but have never found anything similar

Report: Conditions approx 4/8 stcu 3,000' 3pm city lights reflecting off the clouds,
Happen to look up and saw a burning object traveling from S.E to N.E.
It appeared through cloud breaks, smoke trail seemed to be about 1/2 the horizon in length, relative to where i was it was almost straight above my position, Alot of smoke in the trail, It seemed to be burning on one side and if you held an average coin at arms length it would be about the correct size in relation to it actual size at it's given distance, which seemed hard to judge, it looked low, it did not crash and kept moving across the sky. Usually when i see these things they usually is a flash, I have seen about 2 dozen of these things in my life and they end with a flash, but nothing this big before, it look slower in speed and was travelling across the sky at a shallow angle, no reports of satellite or space craft re-entry at the time...and didn't report it because I didn't think anything of it at the time. Hard to estimate time it took to travel across the horizon, but at a guess about 10-20 seconds.
I am a pilot so the report is accurate and not exaggerated.
